Most service centers are now charging between 60 and 70 dollars per hour. The average sprayer repack just packings and filters runs about $170.00 more if you need pistons and cylinders. Many people are trying to convince us that the economy is much better and unemployment is down. In my opinion unemployment is down because the people that have run out of benefits are no longer counted. Food prices are up, fuel and heating oil is on the rise and banks are trying to fee us to death.

Customers are trying to talk down pricing as never before so for that reason it is more important than ever to stress experience, licenses, insurance, training. Another is prep work which a lot of the lowballers will not do correctly or at all.

In the northern half of the country as we all know painting is seasonal, so I suggest a few things.

do not spend money needlessly

work on promoting your business through your website, local free online advertising such as yelp,best of the web and local.com to name a few.

spend more time with your family, Spring will be here before you know it.

and finally work on your customer service. This includes but is not limited to:

answer calls & emails promptly

be on time for appointments and job arrivals

show the homeowner and home respect

clean up after yourselves

stand behind your guarantee

best of luck is not needed if you are prepared

New Year new products

We are heading into a New Year. Hopefully we all will fare better than the last few. In an effort to create more sales we are continually adding new products to our website www.urepairsprayerparts.com.

we have recently added packing kits and pistons for the Graco GH230 series A & B, Graco GH300 series A& B as wells a the GMAX II 79900. We have added our own replacement o-ring repair kits for the Graco Fusion Air Purge Guns and the Graco Mechanical Purge Guns.

We will soon be adding packing kits and pistons for the Titan 1140 Impact and the Titan Powertex 1200sf.

We have also decided to create a special sale for each month. January is a replacement piston rod and packing kit combination for the Titan 440 series sprayers which is $83.00 less than OEM parts pricing when added together .

just thought I would throw together some ideas I have come across while reading several articles that I thought may be helpful to some.

HELP YOUR PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMERS GAIN CONFIDENCE IN YOU. When you arrive wear clean clothing with a shirt that bears your company name & logo. Present yourself with confidence and provide a folder with photos and referrals from prior clients.

ARE YOU THINKING OF LOWERING YOUR PRICE: Instead of lowering your price offer services such as pressure washing decks, fences and concrete areas. Cut back tree limbs touching the structure or cleaning clogged gutters. Items like these are inexpensive for you if you and your equipment are already there. Things like these set you apart from our competition and are of value to clients especially the elderly who cannot do it themselves.

MARKET YOUR BUSINESS MORE NOT LESS: In times that are slow many companies cut or eliminate there marketing budget. This is the time that you should do more. If you are slow you have more time to spend on it. Get a website with a logo and apply to all of the local web advertising outlet which are mostly free. Talk to your local newspaper and ask if they would be interested in a human interest story about “protecting your biggest investment”

GET MORE FROM YOUR EMPLOYEES: When business is lean train your crews to work smarter and ask for their input. They know where to get better. Explain that this program betters the company and them as well and do something to show your appreciation as a tool to keep them interested.

AND FINALLY: Deliver what you promise to your customers, offer a guarantee for work performed and ease their risk assessment. If the time comes and there is a problem deliver on your guarantee. Companies that put their customer first and insist on quality never run out of work and can be sure of repeat work as well as referrals.

Dont let your equipment freeze

It is that time of year in half of the country where we need to think about where we leave and store our equipment. Do not let it freeze. If you store your spray equipment or pressure washers in your backyard shed or garage winterize them. Do not leave your equipment in your van overnight and depending on the temperature your equipment can freeze in your van in several hours. The transducers in your spray equipment will fail if they freeze not to mention damage to pistons and housings if you try to start them while frozen. In addition your pressure washer has 3 ceramic plungers (pistons) that will certainly crack if frozen. Ceramic plungers can be as little as $30.00 each and up to $90.00 each and as stated there are three in a pump. Sprayer transducers can be as little as $58.00 for the mechanical style to as much as $200.00 for the electronic style.

The end of March through the beginning of April I use somewhere around 40 to 50 transducers and about 6 the other 10 months and the same ratio with the ceramic plungers.

All of this expense can be saved with a little caution.

thoughts of a homeowner choosing a painting contractor

This is a story told to me by a homeowner who was in my shop to have his pressure washer repaired.

“We were tempted to hire the low bidder when we solicited bids to paint our home which is 150 years old. We chose the highest bidder of three. the reason we did that was because it was clear from the pre-bid conversation that he had a better understanding of the technical issues involved in a home of this age. He informed me of the lead paint rules and the requirements placed on painting contractors. He took samples of the paint currently on my home for testing before he submitted his bid. the other two contractors did not mention lead paint until I asked them and their answers were very vague.

In addition the winning bidder noticed that we were having some brick and mortar repair on surfaces to be painted and he advised the proper cure time before paint could be applied. He told us that we should be using an elastomeric acrylic coating and told us how he would minimize the dust and debris in the rear of the house where we have many flowers and plants.

It turns out the the paint samples were negative for lead but we were prepared in the event that it was and the main reason for that was our contractor used good practices in every way from his knowledge of regulations to his work habits.

A contractor willing to ignore regulations is just as likely to cut corners, ignore detail and quality.”

I guess that in some cases the RRP rule could be the correct marketing approach.
